Introduction
Today’s voluntary carbon markets are faced with an extremely challenging task: to accelerate centuries of market evolution in the space of a few short decades, to the point where they are mature enough to support a global ecosystem of participants. Given the role of the world’s carbon markets in our society, we can not afford for this task to fail.
With this objective in mind, Nasdaq and the ValueExchange undertook a major international survey in October 2023, reaching out to strategic decision makers across the voluntary carbon market trade cycle. Drawing on views from over 130 project owners, commercial banks, market operators, brokers and investors, this research has been run with two objectives in mind. First, to clearly define the problem statements that the industry faces today in trying to scale and grow. Second, to prioritise the action plan and next steps for the industry, presenting a prioritised “to do” list for us as we look ahead to a year of record growth in 2024.
This report summarises the statistical outputs from this survey, backed by discussions with over 18 industry leaders across North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific.
Who participated?
As a truly industry-wide survey, we have benefited from the insights of 135 decision makers from organizations across the voluntary carbon markets globally in compiling this research. These respondents are broken down as follows:
